Job Summary:

The Juvenile Teaching Assistant supports the Education Department within a juvenile correctional facility by supervising students in the classroom during the teacher's absence. This role involves monitoring attendance, behavior, and assignments, assisting students with coursework, and maintaining a positive and controlled learning environment to foster individual student growth and development.

Responsibilities:

• Supervise students in the classroom when the teacher is absent.
• Take attendance and monitor student behavior and assignment completion.
• Provide guidance to students on completing assignments left by the teacher.
• Manage classroom environment effectively and maintain educational supplies and equipment.
• Collaborate with other departments to enhance the student learning experience.
• Participate in faculty and professional meetings and multidisciplinary treatment teams.
• Develop and maintain clear, accurate reports in compliance with policies.
• Follow policies during critical incidents to prevent injury, escape, or property damage.
• Maintain confidentiality and promote positive relationships with students, staff, and community agencies.
• Attend and successfully complete all required training and certifications.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to implement daily and weekly lesson plans in the absence of an educator.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to create a positive and supportive learning environment.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and accept supervision.
• Successful completion of all required background checks and screenings (drug test, TB test, DCS check, fingerprinting).
• Ability to pass all new hire onboarding requirements.
• Ability to test negative on all drug tests.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Substitute teaching permit or willingness to obtain one during training.
• Experience working with students in an educational setting.

Special Considerations:

• Position is located within a juvenile correctional facility requiring supervision of students in a secure environment.
• Must adhere to strict policies during critical incidents to prevent injury, escape, or property damage.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
• Required to complete up to three weeks of onsite training.
• Must comply with all background and security clearances prior to employment.

Scheduling:

• Full-time, onsite position working 37.5 hours per week.
• Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.
